What can I say, Mayonaka no Yaji-san Kita-san movie was a total breathe of fresh air. A rambunctious Edo-era romp along the Tokaido in the company of a couple of young gay guys, one of whom is addicted to drugs, the film is gaudy, surreal, touching and funny. The two leads, Nagase Tomoya (from TOKIO) and Nakamura Shichinosuke (who comes from a famous kabuki family), breeze through all the mayhem, anachronism and constant reality shifts, with aplomb...they even manage a couple fo kisses. This is one movie that you either love or hate...the rental version in Japan has English subtitles (not always 100% accurate though) so check it out if you're interested. Mark Schilling's Japan Times review is worth a read for more background on the director Kankuro Kudo.
