Chinese actor Ye Liu does a rare frontal scene in the gay love story Lan Yu. The movie is one of the best Asian gay films I've seen and is very moving. Director Stanley Kwan Kam-Pang does a sensitive job and I am curious to check out his other gay-themed movie Hold You Tight. Mainland Chinese gay movies are still something of a rarity, but Lan Yu and Wong Kar Wai's Happy Together have at least opened the door to sucessful, internationally recognised, gay Asian movies.Along similar lines, Korea has its first gay mega-hit King and the Clown, which has broken box office records [read NY Times take on it here]...already it has been dubbed the Korean Brokeback Mountain. Perhaps in the future we'll see more mainstream gay stories in the local film industry.
