China Special: Ye Liu

Chinese actor Ye Liu does a rare frontal scene in the gay love story Lan Yu. The movie is one of the best Asian gay films I've seen and is very moving. Director Stanley Kwan Kam-Pang does a sensitive job and I am curious to check out his other gay-themed movie Hold You Tight. Mainland Chinese gay movies are still something of a rarity, but Lan Yu and Wong Kar Wai's Happy Together have at least opened the door to sucessful, internationally recognised, gay Asian movies.

Along similar lines, Korea has its first gay mega-hit King and the Clown, which has broken box office records [read NY Times take on it here]...already it has been dubbed the Korean Brokeback Mountain. Perhaps in the future we'll see more mainstream gay stories in the local film industry.
